What is GRC and Why does it matter for AI?

GRC stands for Governance, Risk, and Compliance. But more than an acronym, it represents a philosophy: that these three functions are more powerful when integrated than when they operate in silos.

Historically, governance lived in the boardroom, risk lived in finance or IT, and compliance lived with legal. They often didn't talk to each other. The result was duplicated effort, missed risks, and decision-making based on incomplete information.

GRC transforms that model. When governance, risk, and compliance are combined under one program, the organizatio.

Here's how the three elements interact:

GRC transforms that model. When governance, risk, and compliance are combined under one program, the organization.ign organizational activities with strategic goals. In the context of AI, governance means setting the rules: who can use what AI tools, for what purposes, with what safeguards. It also means defining risk appetite, how much AI-related risk the organization is willing to accept in pursuit of its goals.

Risk provides the intelligence. The risk function identifies, assesses, and manages threats, including threats from AI systems, threats to AI systems, and threats from third parties who use AI. It produces the data that governance needs to make informed decisions and that compliance needs to enforce the right controls.

The strategic case for integrating all three is compelling. A unified GRC approach reduces duplicated effort, creates a single source of truth for risk and compliance data, and enables faster, more informed decision-making. It also provides what every leadership team needs: confidence that the organization is innovating responsibly.

For AI specifically, the integration matters because AI risks cut across all three domains simultaneously. A data privacy issue with an AI system is a governance problem (policy), a risk problem (exposure), and a compliance problem (regulatory requirement) all at once. Siloed functions will handle it inconsistently. An integrated GRC program handles it holistically.

AI is here. GRC is how you govern it.
